The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has signed a peace accord, marking a major step towards promoting peaceful coexistence and harmonious competition among presidential aspirants.
Mr Gbenga Adedamola, Chairman of NYCN’s National Transition Committee (NTC), said this on Monday in Abuja as five presidential aspirants of the NYCN signed the peace accord ahead of the national congress.
Adedamola announced that the NYCN National Congress was scheduled to take place from Oct. 5 to 8 in Abuja, with all critical committees working to ensure a successful event.
“This significant event brought together five presidential aspirants, marking a crucial step towards the upcoming congress,” Adedamola said, stressing the importance of unity during the transition.
He said his team had worked tirelessly with the Congress Planning Committee and the Electoral Committee to ensure all logistics and structures were in place for a credible, transparent process.
He revealed that the congress theme was “Redemption Congress: Repositioning the Youth Council for Greatness”, aimed at transforming the council into a more effective voice for Nigerian youth.
“With preparations at an advanced stage, the NYCN is ready to begin a new chapter focused on greater impact in youth advocacy and organisational reform,” Adedamola added.
He said a national management committee meeting was held on Aug. 7, following a formal written demand by two-thirds of member organisations and state chapters.
He said the demand called for the dissolution of the two factional national executive councils led by Mr Sukubo Sukubo and Mr Solomon Adodo, citing misconduct and leadership failures.
“Both the Congress Planning Committee and Electoral Committee are at an advanced stage, with meticulous planning to ensure a credible and successful event,” Adedamola said.
He confirmed that an accessible venue had been arranged in Abuja, with sufficient security measures in place to guarantee the smooth and safe conduct of the congress.
Adedamola said the congress marked a significant milestone in NYCN’s ongoing efforts to promote youth development, leadership inclusion, and empowerment across Nigeria.
He expressed appreciation to state chapters, voluntary youth organisations, and stakeholders for their unwavering support, calling their dedication vital to the council’s progress.
Adedamola also commended past NYCN leaders, stakeholders, and the Federal Ministry of Youth Development for their guidance and oversight in promoting transparency and accountability.
The five presidential aspirants expressed confidence in the electoral process and pledged to abide by the committee’s rules and accept the final outcome of the congress elections.
